IMD Co-Founder Gives Talk on the Math Behind Voting Schemes

Prof. Stanley S. Chang, IMD Co-Founder and Professor of Mathematics at Wellesley College, recently spoke at the Rice University School Mathematics Project (RUSMP) Annual Colloquium. Dr. Chang gave a talk on the “Basic Math Behind Voting Schemes,” sharing ways that teachers in secondary schools can help students apply their mathematical skills to understanding elections. RUSMP’s goal is “to create a better understanding of the nature, beauty, and importance of mathematics and to promote effective teaching of mathematics. Our mission has expanded to include supporting science, technology, engineering, and the arts as they relate to mathematics.” Since it was established in 1987, RUSMP has served as a bridge between the mathematics research community and teachers in Houston and beyond.
