Speakers for AMS/IMD Engaged Pedagogy Workshop
On April 23-25, 2023 IMD is running a workshop on Mathematical Foundations of Democracy as the inaugural installment of the American Mathematical Society’s Engaged Pedagogy Series. This virtual event will feature seven speakers with experience in both research and teaching at the intersection of math and democracy:
- IMD’s own Ismar Volić, Stanley Chang, and Andrew Schultz, all math faculty at Wellesley College.
- Beth Campbell Hetrick, a math professor at Gettysburg College where she designed a first-year seminar course that focuses on the math behind voting and redistricting through the lens of social justice.
- Colorado College math and computer science professor Beth Malmskog and Washington State University data analytics professor Daryl DeFord who study gerrymandering, advocate for fair redistricting processes, and mentor student work on political redistricting.
- The New School’s Jennifer Wilson, who has done research on various topics from social choice theory to resource allocation, incorporating them into her undergraduate courses.
