New Gerrymandering Metric Crafted by IMD Affiliates
IMD affiliates Marion Campisi, Tommy Ratliff, and Stephanie Somersille, along with coauthor Ellen Veomett recently designed the Geography and Election Outcomes (GEO) gerrymandering metric. Unlike previous methods, this metric takes into account both geometric and partisan data to determine the presence of gerrymandering in a redistricting map. Their paper about how the GEO works can be found here. The Washington Post recently published an article about what the GEO has to say about the most recent batch of redistricting maps. The article suggests that the Democrats will feel fewer negative effects of gerrymandering than there have been in recent years.
