IMD’s Support for “Our Common Purpose” Recommendations
The Institute of Mathematics and Democracy is excited to announce that it is an official Champion for the “Our Common Purpose” recommendations, a project of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences advocating to increase the resilience of our constitutional democracy by the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026. IMD is specifically supporting Strategy 1 in “Our Common Purpose,” focused on “achieving equality of voice and representation.” This strategy outlines a series of recommendations, from enlarging the House of Representatives to make it more reflective of the population and introducing ranked-choice voting, to adopting non-winner-take-all election models and supporting independent redistricting commissions. It further recommends election reforms aimed at increasing transparency in campaign finance and establishing term limits for Supreme Court Justices. The “Our Common Purpose” Strategy 1 is strongly aligned with IMD’s mission of implementing mathematically sound practices in democratic processes. The Institute will continue to champion informed political changes that strengthen representation and uplift citizens’ voices.
