IMD Co-Directors Bring Math and Democracy to Detroit Public Schools
As election season arrives, IMD will bring education around math and democracy into Detroit Public Schools. Professors Ismar Volić, Stanley Chang, and Andy Schultz are participating in the program “Math in the D,” which allows students to engage with mathematics in interactive and tangible ways.
Professors Chang and Volić will travel to Detroit in October to deliver two in-person sessions on the Electoral College, open to all high school students and their caregivers. Professor Schultz will do the same virtually, and this event will be streamed to four different high schools.
These sessions will allow Detroit high school students to contextualize the upcoming election and engage with mathematics in ways a typical mathematics curriculum may not allow for. Through demonstrating that mathematics plays a role in democracy, students will be empowered to learn more about electoral processes that define our political systems. IMD looks forward to being part of this program to inspire mathematical curiosity in students.
