IMD Affiliates’ Call for Papers: Mathematical & Computational Democracy Special Issue
IMD affiliates Kristopher Tapp (Saint Joseph’s University, USA) and Ellen Veomett (University of San Francisco, USA) are guest editors of a special issue of La Matematica, the Official Journal of the Association for Women in Mathematics. See below for information on how to contribute:
Call for papers: Mathematical and Computational Democracy
Submission deadline: 1 March 2026
Overview:
This special issue will showcase how mathematical and computational tools can illuminate, evaluate, and strengthen democratic systems. The articles will address central challenges of modern democracy through rigorous theoretical analysis and innovative computational methods.
Contributors may explore a wide range of research questions, such as: What are the tradeoffs between privacy and accuracy when using differential privacy in census data? What mechanisms best guarantee proportional representation for smaller groups in recurring citizens’ assemblies? How can voting rules and allocation mechanisms in participatory budgeting be designed to promote fairness, proportionality, and social cohesion in community decision-making? How can we more rigorously understand, compare and improve spanning tree-based algorithms for sampling balanced graph partitions?
Papers should be submitted at the La Matematica website: https://www.editorialmanager.com/lama/default.aspx
