Grassroots Advocacy Meets Math – Ranked Choice Voting Event
On Tuesday, Wellesley College Government’s Committee for Political Engagement hosted an event on Ranked Choice Voting in collaboration with the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy.
Prof. Ismar Volić from IMD gave an engaging crash course on the shortcomings of our plurality voting system, the math behind ranked choice voting, and the transformative impacts of this voting method for equity and representation.
We also heard from Nathan Lockwood, the Executive Director of Rank the Vote, who shared about the nation-wide grassroots advocacy movement galvanizing support for RCV reforms. He provided valuable insights on ballot measures for RCV across the United States, ways to approach conversations with RCV skeptics, success stories from around the world, and ways to contribute your passions and skills to organizing efforts.
Thank you to our wonderful speakers, to IMD intern Ilinca Drondoe for moderating the event, and to Wellesley’s CPE team for bringing us together! A specific shoutout to Sara Popkin for organizing their last CPE event so brilliantly as they wrap up their year as Wellesley’s Political Engagement Coordinator. We had so much fun concluding our semester with this fun event.
