“Counted Out” Film Features IMD Co-founder
Director Vicki Abeles’ new documentary Counted Out highlights the often hidden ways our world runs on math. Through investigating crises like political polarization, inequity, and climate change, the film highlights the importance of understanding the mathematical underpinnings of society in order to be empowered to make change.
IMD co-founder Professor Ismar Volić was interviewed in the film for his work on the role of mathematics in democratic systems. Electoral mechanisms have massive impacts on our everyday lives. Educating the public about the design of these systems is an important part of building a civically engaged population. Mathematical analysis plays a role in democracy at every level, from the way we cast a vote to gerrymandering.
This week, Prof. Volić spoke at a KALW screening of the film in San Francisco. He shared his research into the math of politics and ways in which math can improve electoral systems. IMD is grateful for the opportunity to share our work and engage in dialogue with others dedicated to using math for societal good.
