An Op-Ed on Math and Politics Education by the IMD affiliate Marion Campisi

Professor Marion Campisi, IMD Affiliate and Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at San José State University, recently wrote an opinion piece for The Fulcrum. The article calls attention to the importance of mathematics in the study of democracy and politics.

Although mathematics is central to our democratic systems, it is often neglected in public discourse. Campisi argues that the power of mathematics is integral to enabling people to understand the systems that govern society. For example, mathematical evidence that points to partisan gerrymandering has often been dismissed, but the truth is that mathematics is critical for identifying and solving such a complex problem. Campisi calls for a change in attitude — the opinions of experts, in particular those who ground their claims in mathematics, should be much more valued in political discourse.
In recognition of the lack of discussion about mathematics in politics, Campisi developed a Math in Politics course at San José State University with the goal of helping her students understand the ways in which mathematics permeates our democracy.
