AMS Engaged Pedagogy Series – Mathematical Foundations for Democratic Processes
On April 23-25, 2023 from 1-5 pm EST, IMD is hosting a workshop on the Mathematical Foundations of Democratic Processes for the AMS Engaged Pedagogy Series. Featuring seven speakers with experience in both teaching and research at the intersection of math and democracy, each day of this virtual event will feature presentations and problem sessions. In the presentations, attendees will learn about the math behind politics, with a different topic covered each day:
- Sunday, April 23: Voting and social choice theory
- Monday, April 24: Gerrymandering
- Tuesday, April 25: Apportionment and quantification of power
Interactive problem sessions will allow attendees to see some ways to integrate this material into their own classrooms. All attendees will have access to the slides and problem sets from throughout the workshop. Registration is open until April 19th, 2023, and costs $200 for AMS members and $300 for non-members.
