IMD Affiliate’s Op-eds on Gerrymandering
IMD affiliate and associate professor of mathematics at Saint Mary’s College Ranjan Rohatgi wrote three opinion pieces on the need for better redistricting practices in his home state of Illinois. First, “The redistricting process should belong to the people. Indiana needs help getting there” co-written with Christopher Harris of Hammond, Indiana and Marilyn Moran-Townsend of Fort Wayne, Indiana can be found here. This article details the importance of an independent commission for redistricting in Indiana and the failed attempts to create one. After the release of the state’s 2021 congressional district maps, Rohatgi and his coauthor Leigh Morris, former mayor of La Porte, Indiana published “An opportunity missed on redistricting in Indiana” (found here) which highlights the ongoing gerrymandering problem. Most recently, “Viewpoint: Indiana, look to Michigan for a model of how to redistrict fairly” (available to read here) outlines an attainable solution that is currently used in Michigan. All of these articles are published and free to read on the South Bend Tribune’s website.
