IMD student, Guadalupe Portillo Deras, to Speak about Math and Politics at Wellesley’s Mathematics Department Student Seminar

IMD student, Guadalupe Portillo Deras, will give a talk titled “Quantifying Young Tableaux Multiplication and Integrating Politics into Mathematics ” at Wellesley College’s Mathematics Department Student Seminar.

The presentation will take place on Wednesday, May 5th at 2:30pm EDT, on zoom.

Here is the abstract of Guadalupe’s talk:

Young tableaux serve as a graphical representation of ranked voting profiles. In this project, we analyze how the shape and entries of tableaux can affect the shape of their product. We can quantify differences in tableaux with a distance formula that gives the set of tableaux an additional structure as a pseudometric space. By numerically measuring the distance between two tableaux with similar factors, one can define the notion of continuity or chaotic behavior of maps. In addition, I will show the impact of including politics, and more generally social studies, into K-12 mathematics classrooms.
